PING 1-A: The Putter That Changed Golf Forever

PING 1-A: The Putter That Changed Golf Forever

The unmistakable "PING." The revolutionary design. The beginning of one of golf's most iconic brands.

Few golf clubs can honestly claim they changed the game forever. The original PING 1-A is one of those rare exceptions.

Long before the Anser became the most copied putter in history, before major championships and PGA Tour victories made PING a household name, there was a simple, unconventional putter built inside a small garage by an engineer who believed golfers deserved something better.

That putter was the PING 1-A.

The Birth of an Icon

The story begins with Karsten Solheim, an engineer for General Electric who was frustrated with the inconsistent performance of the putters available during the 1950s.

Rather than accepting the status quo, Solheim approached golf equipment the way an engineer would—through experimentation, precision, and physics.

Working in his California garage, he began designing putters unlike anything golfers had ever seen.

The result was the PING 1-A, introduced in 1959.

It became the very first club to carry the PING name and ultimately launched one of the most respected equipment manufacturers in golf history.

Why Is It Called "PING"?

The answer is wonderfully simple.

When the ball strikes the face of the PING 1-A, the unique hollow aluminum construction produces a crisp, high-pitched metallic tone unlike any other putter of its era.

"PING."

That unmistakable sound immediately caught golfers' attention.

Karsten Solheim loved it so much that he named both the putter—and eventually the entire company—after that distinctive sound.

Today, over 65 years later, golfers around the world still associate that crisp impact note with precision and quality.

Very few golf clubs have ever inspired the name of an entire brand.

Engineering Ahead of Its Time

Although it appears simple by today's standards, the PING 1-A was remarkably innovative for its era.

Its design featured:

  • Heel-shafted construction

  • Lightweight cast aluminum body

  • Hollow cavity architecture

  • Distinctive slot design

  • Precision weight distribution

  • Minimalist industrial styling

Rather than relying on traditional craftsmanship alone, Solheim designed the club using engineering principles to improve balance, feel, and consistency.

That philosophy would later define every PING club that followed.

The Legendary Sound

Perhaps no characteristic of the PING 1-A is more memorable than its unmistakable impact sound.

Unlike modern milled stainless steel putters that often produce a muted "click," the PING 1-A delivers a bright, crisp metallic note that immediately tells the golfer where the ball met the face.

Collectors often describe it as one of the most satisfying sounds in golf.

For many enthusiasts, one stroke with an original 1-A is enough to understand exactly why the company became known as PING.

It's not marketing.

It's the sound that started it all.

The Foundation of an Industry Leader

Without the PING 1-A, there would be:

  • No PING Anser

  • No Scottsdale series

  • No Kushin

  • No Pal

  • No B60

  • No Sigma or PLD putters

The engineering philosophy first introduced with the 1-A ultimately led to some of the most influential putter designs ever produced.

Perhaps most famously, the PING Anser, introduced in 1966, went on to become the most copied putter design in golf history.

Its DNA traces directly back to the original 1-A.

Why Collectors Love the PING 1-A

Original PING 1-A putters have become highly sought-after collectibles for several reasons.

Historical Importance

This was the club that launched one of golf's most iconic equipment manufacturers.

Revolutionary Design

Its engineering-first approach changed how putters would be designed for generations.

Unique Sound

No other vintage putter produces quite the same crisp "PING" that made the company famous.

Originality Matters

Collectors place tremendous value on examples that retain:

  • Original shaft

  • Original grip

  • Original finish

  • Original paint fill

  • Unaltered specifications

A completely original PING 1-A represents a genuine piece of golf history.

A Lasting Legacy

More than six decades after its introduction, the PING 1-A remains one of the most significant putters ever produced.

Its influence can still be seen in modern putter engineering, while its unmistakable sound continues to delight golfers fortunate enough to roll one across a green.

Many clubs have won tournaments.

Very few have created an entirely new company.

Even fewer have changed the direction of golf equipment forever.

The PING 1-A accomplished both.

Our Display Piece

At TEE OFF GOLF SHOPS, we're proud to display an original PING 1-A preserved with its original components—a reminder of where one of golf's greatest success stories began.

Whether you're a collector, a historian, or simply someone who appreciates the craftsmanship behind classic equipment, the PING 1-A deserves its place among the most important golf clubs ever created.

Sometimes the greatest innovations don't begin with a massive research facility.

Sometimes...

They begin with one engineer, one garage, and one unforgettable sound.

PING.
